Overview

From May 12 - 15, 2009, more than 600 delegates from 47 countries gathered in sub-tropical Brisbane, Australia to:

•  Develop knowledge and share skills in consumer driven supportive care  for women with breast cancer and their families;

•  Discuss and share effective models for peer support and consumer advocacy;

•  Improve intra and cross regional consumer networks, collaboration and partnerships; and

•  Build international efforts to reduce the impact of breast cancer on women, their families and the community.

The 2009 Conference was a great success, focusing on three key areas: Survivorship, Capacity Building and Peer Support.  Speakers from around the world presented, with special sessions on issues faced by young women, women with advanced breast cancer, cross-cultural communication, advocacy, solutions for low resource countries and communities, and benefit finding.

Our Conference logo – the Southern Cross

Our Conference logo features a great Australian icon – the Southern Cross constellation of stars.  The Southern Cross is best seen only in the night skies of the Southern Hemisphere and has long played a significant role in Australia ’s history – from Aboriginal legend to a symbol of freedom and Australian identity.

In 2009 the UICC Reach to Recovery International Breast Cancer Conference will be held under new skies, in the Southern Hemisphere, and the Southern Cross is a powerful symbol of this new perspective and of Australia.
